I know the goal was to enhance our knowledge of tools and resources out on the web to better interact with our patrons and have a better understanding of how to accommodate there needs. But i know from personal experience that alot of times people already know how to use the tools they have and need. Those that don't understand aren't to keen into learning about new tools as they tend not to use them as frequently as those that do. With that in mind i didn't gain much of any personal satisfaction or knowledge that will help me in the future. Nothing we did really suprised me or got me interested in anything new. I doubt i will ever go back and use any of the services i signed up for when doing the exersizes. I don't even think i will be using the google mail account either. It will all go stale and delete itself most likely. I don't think there was any way of really improving the program. For the way it was presented it was easy to use and understand everything that was given to us. I believe they did a great job in having the video's and all the information given to start us down the right path. The only thing i think that matters is the individual person and the ability to want to explore these tools and resources. To want to use them as a long term service. If another program was offered it would have to depend on the content provided and if it was something i was interested in. If not than i was decline the chance to participate. That way a spot would be saved open for someone that may have the interest in it. I may sound pretty repetitive in the reflection but it stands true. Why bother with taking a class or learning something that you don't have an interest in. Right now i'm thinking on buying a pvplayer. I have been reading up on those like they are going outa style. I have been researching them daily and trying to find the trends they follow. Hopefully i will make a good decision on one that will fit my needs and last long enouph to where i won't have to upgrade anytime soon. Also i read up about once a week on new computer parts. I have been looking at building a new computer so i want to know my options. So maybe next time before a program like this rolls out maybe there will be a "poll" on what tools and things people may want to explore or learn about. But thats my reflection on it. May not be the best and most positive but heck you asked and i provided.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-7973896225448425708?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

#19 Snacks...check. I don't remember much of my child hood other than a blur of regristration numbers and logins. That being said i was pretty much a gamer kid. As soon as i was able to get ahold of a computer and play online games the console world died. First on-line game i can remember playing was trade wars :) it was a BBS(bulletin board system) game where you flew a ship around trading to make money to buy bigger and better ships and create planets to make your place in the universe. It was all text based so you had little to no graphics other than what they could create with letters, numbers, and symbols. I also about that time started playing earth2025 and utopia. Both were text based games also. It wasn't until i started paying Ultima online that i dived into the world of on-line gaming. I know it's not the same small potatoe games we were supposed to play. But i'm not into yahoo games and playing solitare. I went for something a little more stimulating to my tastes. I didn't really have to research any other on-line gaming sites as i have played enouph of them to know where to find them and how to play them. I do however like to get some of the smaller games onto my phone like bejewelled and tetris. recently however i have strayed away from playing video games and rarely play them anymore. I do pick up a game every so often to kill time but i have yet to bury myself into another on-line game. I'm trying the "real life" game where i try to socialize with real people. It's not as fun as saving the world from orcs but hey i can do that in my spare time.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-1754578128531817013?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brian-olp20.blogspot.com/2008/07/19-snackscheck-drinkscheck-logging.html' title='#19 Snacks...check. I can even follow the path i should be taking and it keeps loading the new areas for me and i can almost make sense of how to get to where i'm going. I even use it on my cell phone since i have interenet on my phone. So basicly i have a map of everywhere anywhere. until i get lost and lose cell service and end up crying on the side of the road like a lost child without a cookie and wondering when the next vehicle will arrive to save me and bring me home. maybe feed me dinner depending on how long i was left alone lost. But hey i guess thats why we print up our driving directions these days. It just makes getting lost that much harder. Unless of course you find yourself in a hurry and forget them at home and half way down the road figure out you really don't remember the third turn to make and it's getting dark and very hard to read the road signs and that sense of getting lost just seems to be overwhelming. But hey thats what that cell phone was invented for to call ahead and ask for directions or re-look up the map. Isn't it great having those maps to use.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-4428269951776396960?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brian-olp20.blogspot.com/2008/07/18-can-you-tell-me-how-to-get-how-to.html' title='#18 Can you tell me how to get... I have known a couple people to immerse themselves into second lives. I kinda fell into the same thing but mine was more in an on-line game. Take for instance everquest or WoW. You create a character to represent yourself in this on-line world and you go about making it your life. Pretty soon i was wondering if i could really live off of summoned bread and water and maybe if i was lucky a goblin wouldn't attack me in my sleep. I was a resident of a guild that thought it was more important to kill on-line monsters than go to work or school. Some of them lucky enouph to be retired or still living at home had the ability to play all day and expected the same from everyone else. Those "hard core" people i doubt ever saw the sky or thought day time only existed if you clapped your hands twice. I don't know if i would ever try anything "second life-ish" again. But who knows the on-line life is much more enjoyable and i can look like a cool gnome to boot.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-4094623095767237255?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

#16 Gizmo's and Gadget's the on-line tool box

I'm not much of a fan about signing up for a million and one different sites especially to use free tools that are already provided on most computers i use. As for explaining these tools to other people most are in to much of a hurry to want to hear about them. If it's not instant gratification it's not worth the hassel. If most sites provided there service without a hitch or a signup i think people would be more inclined to use there services or tools. As for now i think i will keep my own tool box hidden away and locked up to save myself when i'm stranded on the side of the information highway. I really don't know… Other than I have become accustomed to using it. It’s simple, quick, and for the most part has done a decent job of finding me what I need. As long as I don’t go more than a page out. In which case the search is destroyed and made irrelevant. Almost like it finds a trace of what I was looking for turns it around backwards maybe adds in a few extra words and posts some sites. As for the meta searches I think the mamma one is just funny and I might try using it more to see how it compares. I know that you can do searches to test them. But I’m not one to look them over side by side. I will just have to field test it when I need it.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-505686853122713000?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

#14 If a podcast is played in a forrest and no one is around does it make a sound?

i'm not a fan of podcasting... probably because i don't have anything important to listen to. i did play a couple of the other library pod casts just to hear a couple and some are good and some are bad. I would say that would be a usefull tool to have. especially since it carries more of a interaction than just reading the information. I did find some of the teen podcasts and the skits they did very entertaining. As for subscribing to them and listening to them everyday i doubt i'm up for that kind of commitement to them. But i'm guessing if i wrote an e-mail all in burning text i would be forever put into shame. along with maybe being asked why i sent a file the size of a hard drive, all to say hey i got your message and sent this one back in response hope you like the new text i found online. As for the card generators and such it's really cool to send an online card free than pay for one and mail it or give it in person. also adds that added touch of flare to the most boring of paper. I didn't play around with it to much as i didn't need any cards sent at this time and when i upload a animated text it lost it's animation. due to the actual site i made it on not supporting web hosting i had to download it and i don't need to keep it longer than the five seconds to look at it. So in this case it actually was a good idea to look over this one. I can now find a hundred more sites to make myspace backgrounds and cool looking letters.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-432667311742503536?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brian-olp20.blogspot.com/2008/06/13-i-can-do-my-own-plastic-surgery-on.html' title='#13 I can do my own plastic surgery on-line... Sounds like a great ideal; i can get my material without leaving the house. sadly i'm not much for reading books off my monitor screen. i also don't care to much for having a digital copy of it. i would rather read the real deal. get some great page flipping action. enjoy that wonderous paper smell as you scream through each fun filled adventure. now i can see the digital material a huge benefit for reference materials and informational materials that i could skim through or use the search function to find what i'm looking for faster than page flipping. or to tag pages for future reference at later times. even though we are getting more and more things faster than the speed of click... i think i would rather browse a collection and enjoy the drive to the store.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-7498447257497012639?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brian-olp20.blogspot.com/2008/06/books-and-media-in-overdrive-now-faster.html' title='#12 Books and Media in Overdrive. Other than the fact that it doesn't host the world of tv yet it's getting close. Once they upgrade to 1080p HD programming or i guess i could call it H.264 or x264 some people call it. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264</a> for more information about such things. but i guess posting that bumps me a week ahead of schedule. anyways back to the fun of online content. I believe it would be a great benefit to have a better on demand viewing of shows. Anytime, Anyplace, Anyone. Than you can sell me a 9"LCD, PDA with wireless access. Have the cities mass spam free wireless service and i can watch what i want, when i want, where i want, how i want. Even than give me an upgrade to a built in micro projector system that will produce a 30" viewable on any surface display and call it good. Add in a 1 speaker "surround" and BAM you have instant gratification and babysitting for everyone. Or maybe instead of everyone fighting with speakers you could just buy a pair of "surround" headphones a couple splitters and have everyone tap into it. but i guess after all that i have strayed from the point at hand. GO YOUTUBE! way to bring in the world of entertainment to the masses. Now make it better so we don't have to watch it in such low resolutions and horrible detail. we all want utter video perfection at the cost of nothing. PM me! :) LOL

I have had a myspace for quite some time now. it was cool at first posting pictures and commenting on other peoples pictures and looking at what other people write about themselves. Than it all faded away one day and it seemed that i was posting the same thing or no longer adding content or just in general staring at the screen. So i kinda stepped away from it for awhile. Maybe i will look it over once in awhile to see if everyone hasn't dumped me as a friend. Cause it seems that if you don't fight for the top 8 people bump you to the back log of friends and never talk to you again. which is kinda funny. even after eliminating the need to be social in the real world and fight for the free time to spend with friends. we now argue and fight over a pixalized world where we are given a rank and standings for how "good" a friend we are. The theory of my of bestfriend is the #1 or my significant other fits the profile of "popularity" even over the great world of the internet. I don't much care anymore for social networks as i would rather participate in the real world battle to have true social interaction with real people. The only good thing about these social networks is keeping in touch with friends that may not live in the same area or you can't possibly see once a month. But for the rest of them... grab a phone... hook up time and go DO something with the people your friends with. Host a barbeque or a party and invite them all over and enjoy a night of fun. Plan a sports event and a lunch out. Don't get sucked into how much screen time you spend with your friends. It's not worth the suffering.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-7695268837913617148?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brian-olp20.blogspot.com/2008/04/8-will-you-be-my-pixelized-friend-pm-me.html' title='#8 Will you be my pixelized friend? It is of someone cosplaying Archer from fate, stay, night. What interests me about the pictures is the daggers or small swords he is holding. I will be cosplaying as him when i go to AX in july. I was looking for ideas of how to make a similar pair without to much of a hassle. so looking at what others have done is a good start for making my way to victory. to bad there wasn't contact information for the person in the picture or i would ask what he did to make them. but i guess i have to go sifting through countless bloggs and websites. i could also magicly create some artistic abilities and find a way to make them myself. I don't much listen to music while at my computer. although i do use my computer to play music in my house. Like if i'm cleaning or working on a project i will turn it to media mode and let it run it's thing. I do have alot of music i listen to and normally have alot of play lists depending on my need for the day. As for listening to streaming music... i don't think it's for me. i like the idea of finding similar music depending on what i put in to listen to. but i don't much spend alot of time looking for similar music. i just pick up what i see down the road and dive in. but hey as soon as they let me have a 5.1 system at my desk at work... i might take up steaming music to listen to.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-4804689955794518115?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

#5 Feeding the Monster

I have never used RSS readers or feeders as i'm not much of a farmer. So i may end up having alot of stored up new content to skim over regardless of what site i visit. The only benefit i can see is if the RSS keeps your content past the experation date of the site that hosts it. i know with come news articles as soon as it's old it's archived or removed to make room for new content. This would save the trouble of searching archived material. The three i subscribed to was Dilbert, Lio, and Anandtech.com. I may use it more if i find or read other sites for information. I do also like how they have a mobile way of sending out feeds so that people can get there information on the run. I believe the biggest benefit the library would have about using RSS feeds is maybe in support to library events. Examples being Childrens story time and teen events. This way people don't have to dig for events but can have what events they want to attend sent to them. Or maybe being used as a "new" book list update once a week for those that want to know whats hitting out shelves on what days and want to reserve a copy before it does. All in all i'm pleased with learning about them just a little even if i don't pursue the use of them in the future.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-8297020851116926203?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

Step 3... Not much to see.

It seems that they missed a couple things about the IM services. As with msn you can add yahoo and i think one or two other IM addresses to it and talk accross to each other. Trillian i have used in the past and it works rather well. Another service i'm sad to see they left out was IRC chat. Which may not be "mainstream" popular but it is still used alot. I don't plan on using meebo or google chat as i don't really need or care to try and incorperate another chat program to my ensemble of chat usage. I'm perfectly happy using good ole msn chat if i really need it. As with most people if they want to get ahold of me and talk, they created this cool invention called a cell phone which does not require me to be stationary. i can also use msn chat on my cell phone to talk to those that don't text. Again kinda suprising they didn't add text messaging to the list of instant chat that is widely used today. I know it's not a on-line service but hey why IM when you can text.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/728221487720420899-3023135509568051202?l=brian-olp20.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brian-olp20.blogspot.com/2008/03/step-3-not-much-to-see.html' title='Step 3...
